Ensure accountability of public expenses
Water resources minister urges accountants
Bss, Dhaka
Water Resources Minister Hafiz Uddin Ahmed yesterday called upon the accounts officers to apply the computerised financial management system to bring transparency and accuracy in the accounting system. Transparency is needed to ensure accountability of all public expenses and build confidence of the people in the government organisations such as Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), he added. The minister was inaugurating a course titled "Enhanced Financial Management Training" for the accounts officers. Financial Management Academy (Fima) organised the course in Dhaka. Canadian High Commissioner David Sproule, Comptroller and Auditor General Asif Ali and Fima Director General Salahuddin Ahmed also spoke at the function with Water Resources Secretary SM Jahurul Islam in the chair. The training programme is conducted under the "Modernisation of the Ministry of Water Resources Financial Management Capability Project" with the assistance of Canadian International Development Agency (Cida). Hafiz asked the accounts officers to apply the computerised system to settle the huge number of audit objections. Hafiz also urged the officials concerned to develop a strong database for updating internal accounts and transactions with others, including contractors and suppliers of those organisations.
