Aug 21 suspect Mukul's driver denied bail

A Dhaka court yesterday rejected the bail petition of Monzur Hossain who was arrested for his alleged involvement in August 21 grenade attacks on Awami League (AL) rally.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Shamsul Alam passed the order when Monzur was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on completion of his four-day remand.

Monzur is the driver of Mokbul Hossain alias Mukul whose name was disclosed by George Miah.

George Miah, who gave a confessional statement to a magistrate on June 26, said a group of 14 led by one of the most wanted criminals Subrata Bain Shuvro and Mukul carried out the attacks on an Awami League rally.

The forwarding report placed before the court said Monzur drove Mukul and others on a microbus to Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21, 2004. The investigation officer (IO) gathered important information from him about the bomb blast that is being verified.

The IO seized two passports from his residence in which Monzur used different addresses, dates and places of birth. He should be confined in jail until the investigation is completed or he will leave the country forever, the IO said.

After hearing, the court rejected the bail petition and ordered to send him to Dhaka Central Jail.

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Monzur Hossain, 40, son of late Abdur Rahim from his Dholaipar High School Road house in the city's Shyampur area on August 28.

Saibal Saha Partha, Abdur Rahman, Habib alias Hannan, Waliullah, Hasan Zahid Tusher, Zahir Hossain, Akhter, Jiten, Monir, Mohammad Hossain, Ayub Ali, George Miah, Moklesur Rahman and Badsha Miah were arrested in the August 21 grenade attack case filed by the police on August 22.

Among them Partha, Abdur Rahman and Moklesur were granted bail from the High Court.
