Loadshedding in Moulvibazar, Habiganj
Tea gardens install their own power supply system

Twenty-nine tea gardens out of 67 in Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts have installed their own power generation system by using natural gas as frequent loadshedding affected their production.

All the gardens are under the command area of Rural Electrification Board (REB).

Power connection by REB is still there in the gardens but as a stand-by arrangement, sources in some of the gardens told this correspondent.

The gardens have created their own generation systems after erratic power supply hampered production for 6-7 years, they said. Now production is uninterrupted.

Tea processing is a highly technical and sensitive matter. The quality is greatly affected if power supply fails during processing, they said.

To overcome the situation, 11 tea gardens under Moulvibazar REB and 18 under Habiganj REB have installed 'captive power generation' by using natural gas.

There are 46 tea gardens under Moulvibazar REB and 21 under Habiganj REB. Authorities of the remaining gardens are also thinking to install their own power generation system, the sources said.

REB sources said its revenue earning from tea gardens in the two districts has decreased after the gardens installed their own power supply systems.
