7 missing as 3 fishing trawlers sink in Meghna estuary

At least seven fishermen are feared missing as three fishing trawlers with 32 people, caught in a gusty wind, sank in the Meghna estuary early yesterday. Reports received from the area said 32 fishermen on board FB Moni-1, FB Lalmia and FB Mansur went for fishing Saturday afternoon. Along with fishermen on other vessels, they were fishing in Charwarden area in Baufal upazila in Patuakhali district at night. At about 2-30 am on Sunday, three of the trawlers capsized being caught in sudden gusty wind. Thirteen fishermen and crew swam to a shoal in nearby Char Miazan at night. Other fishing boats rescued another 12 yesterday morning. But seven could not be traced till the report was filed yesterday evening. They are Manik, 42, Shibu, 28, Helal, 25, Adhir, 40, Shankar, 22, Zahid, 26 and Shohag, 28. All of the missing fishermen hail from Gobindapur and Durgapur villages in Bakerganj upazila in Barisal district, the survivors said. The survivors include Shohrab, Mano Mohan, Sirajuddin and Narayan. Owners of the missing trawlers sent rescue teams.
