Studying religion

This has reference to the letter by Mr. Amin U. Sarkar on the subject (DS 22/8/05). In my junior school years (early sixties) mass in our churches was said in Latin. I well remember to have answered in Latin from the mass book written in Bangla (with Latin pronunciation). Bangla has been established as the medium of mass all over Bangladesh. English mass is held at Ramna Cathedral (Dhaka) mainly for foreigners. We have Bangla Bibles, we have our weekly publication (the weekly Pratibeshi) in Bangla. Most of our priests are now from Bangladesh (previously American priests led the churches in remote villages also).

Mr. Sarkar has pointed out the disadvantages of studying religion without understanding it. Education is not just memorising textbooks. If I follow the ideology of my father of having eight children I doubt very much if this ideology will be acceptable anywhere in the present day world.
