US embassy clarifies

A US embassy spokesperson yesterday said US Charge d' Affaires Judith Chammas did not label Bangladesh as a volatile, unstable or failing state. The spokesperson told the news agency when asked to react to Speaker Jamiruddin Sircar's ruling in parliament on Wednesday that "under diplomatic norms it is unusual for a charge d' affaires to utter such words." Quoting excerpts from Chammas' statement made at AmCham luncheon meeting on Tuesday, the spokesman said they believe that the speaker had referred to the following paragraph of her statement. "More broadly still, Bangladesh must address the concerns of international business about the political stability of the country. The August 17 attacks made international headlines and these reports of political and extremist violence tend to overshadow reports about economic growth and development in Bangladesh. To counter these concerns that Bangladesh is volatile and unstable, that it is even a so-called failing state, the government must mount a credible and effective effort to bring to justice the perpetrators of these acts of political and terrorist violence." The spokesperson said the paragraph shows that " the charge d' affaires did not label Bangladesh as a volatile, unstable or failing state. Rather, she emphasized the importance that the Bangladesh government counters any misperceptions that suggest that Bangladesh fits these descriptions". Asked about the US legislators' letter to the secretary of state, the spokesperson said, "We have no comment other than to say that the views voiced by the Senators and Representatives speak for themselves."
