Fresh agitation in Rajshahi, hartal today

A fresh agitation programme was launched in Rajshahi city yesterday demanding fair trial of nine-year-old schoolgirl Mili rape and murder case.The residents of the city, led by the newly formed movement council for justice to murders, staged demonstrations and formed a human chain at zero point in the afternoon, blocking the road for an hour. They will enforce a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the city today and student strike at all educational institutions tomorrow. The agitating people also held a rally at the zero point. Chaired by Mili's mother Hasina Begum, the rally was addressed, among others, by journalist Saidur Rahman, Mohila Parishad General Secretary Kolpona Roy, Barind Development Forum Director Fayezullah Chowdhury, Zahangir Alam Aakash, Debashish Pramanik Debu, Prof Rozetti Nasrin and lawyer Khairul Alam. The speakers protested the role of police in the investigation and demanded punishment to the culprits. Mafruza Khatun Mili was raped and killed by a gang of miscreants on May 3 when she was alone at their house in the city. Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department, Rajshahi, submitted the final report of Mili rape and murder case, seeking release of three accused-- Fazle Rabi Lion, Saduzzaman Minar, and Fazlur Rahman. Mili's family members alleged that some leaders of the ruling alliance influenced the investigation into the case.
