Bid to achieve $1000 per capita income by 2021
Dhaka chamber unveils 'Vision 2021' today

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) is going to launch today a national economic vision styled 'Vision 2021' to achieve US$ 1000 per capita income by 2021.

The DCCI plans to urge major political parties to work together to attain the all-important economic goal through this vision.

President Iajuddin Ahmed will unveil the vision at a function at Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka. Science and ICT Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan, Commerce Minister Altaf Hossain Choudhury, Commerce Ministry Adviser Barkat Ullah Bulu and Editor of The Daily Star Mahfuz Anam are also expected to be present at the launching programme.

"Both the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the Awami League have little difference when it comes to economic agenda. They can easily work together to fulfill the vision," Sayeeful Islam, president of DCCI, briefed a group of journalists in Dhaka yesterday on the eve of announcing the vision launch.

Bangladesh missions abroad, Islam said, should also refurbish their strategy, focusing more on market intelligence instead of political diplomacy.

He said the machinery of government must be designed to have coordination among the ministries concerned to achieve the economic goal.

Policies and activities of the ministries of commerce, industries, jute and textile, finance, energy and power often contradict one another, Islam said.

The business community through this vision urge these ministers along with the education and labour and employment ministers to meet the prime minister and major trade bodies to ensure policy coordination to achieve the goals, the DCCI president said.

He, however, emphasised the need for more vocational education and privatisation of the state-owned enterprises.

DCCI Senior Vice President Mamun-ur-Rahman Raskin and Jatiya Press Club President and The News Today Editor Reazuddin Ahmed also attended the press briefing.
