Bhasani University
50 injured as cops attack students

Authorities declared Bhasani University closed and asked students to vacate halls by ten this morning after some 50 students were injured in a police action yesterday.

Police also rounded up at least 20 students.

The vice-chancellor of Moulana Bhasani University of Science & Technology however said the Durga Puja vacation will begin two days before the schedule.

Witnesses said police launched the attack when the students, who have been demonstrating for reduction in credit fees for the last few days, went to the VC office to press for their demand.

VC Professor Khalilur Rahman at that time was in Dhaka to have a meeting with Luthfur Rahman Khan Azad, minister-in charge of the district.

Superintendent of Police Abdullahel Baki rushed to the spot to discuss with the agitating students. But at one stage, Magistrate Ziauddin, who was on the scene, directed the law enforcers to baton-charge the students.

Police clubbed the students indiscriminately and left at least 50 students injured. They did not even listen to the teachers' request to stop such action.

"Police did it to disperse the students," said the police super adding, "The arrest will continue."
