Rab man sent to jail on rape charge

A Dhaka court yesterday sent a Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) member to jail as he appeared before the court to surrender and seek bail in a rape case filed against him.Judge Samsul Arefin of the Special Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-5 sent Sub-inspector Mohammad Ujjal to jail, asking the Mirpur police to investigate the case. The victim had filed the case with the special tribunal on September 1. Ujjal appeared before the High Court earlier on September 11 seeking bail in advance. The High Court, denying his bail, ordered him to appear before the tribunal concerned within three weeks. In the complaint, the victim said she used to live at Ujjal's house at the Ansar Staff Quarters as a tenant. The Rab member proposed her of an illicit relation which she refused. Refused, Ujjal raped her on the May 31 evening. The victim, on next day, tried to file a case with Mirpur Police Station but it refused to accept the case. She later filed a complaint to the home ministry. The victim left the house where Ujjal threatened to kill her and moved to her aunt's house. The victim in her complaint said several criminals hired by the accused abducted her from her aunt's house on August 27 but Rab rescued her later.
