BEI's dialogue to enhance competition awareness
Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) organised a national dialogue on Tuesday to enhance awareness about the need for a functional competition regime for the country.Participants representing various stakeholder groups from the country took part in the meeting, which was inaugurated by Chairman of Privatisation Commission Enam Ahmed Chaudhury at the BEI Conference Hall in Dhaka, says a press release. Chaudhury stressed the need for a comprehensive competition policy, which would provide significant advantages to both the businesses and consumers. A functional competitive regime would make the economy more attractive to foreign direct investment, he added. Iftekar Ahmed, senior research fellow of BEI, presented a draft country advocacy document, highlighting a comprehensive analysis of the competition scenario in Bangladesh. Among other speakers, Debapriya Bhattacharya, executive director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue, gave a brief presentation on the 'Role of the Civil Society in Promoting a Healthy Competition Culture in Bangladesh' and Zafrullah Chowdhury, president of Consumer Association of' Bangladesh, spoke on 'Competition and Consumer Protection in Bangladesh: An Activist's Perspective'.
