Laboni sets pool afire


Laboni Akhter Jui hogged the spotlight on the opening day of the Keya Cosmetics 21st National Swimming Competition creating two national records at the Mirpur National Complex yesterday.

The Ansar swimmer took 2 minutes 48.99 seconds to set a new record in the women's 200 metres individual medley bettering the previous timing of 2 min 49.69 secs.

Star swimmer Dolly Akhter of BJMC clocked 2 mins 49.70 secs and Lovely Khatun of Ansar timed 2 mins 55.39 secs to finish second and third respectively.

In the women's 200m butterfly, Laboni grabbed first place with her second mark (2 min 58.98 secs). She smashed the old record 3 mins 04.36 seconds.

A total of six events were held on the opening day where another new national record was set in the women's event by Sabura Khatun in the women's 400 m freestyle. However, none of the records will count according to international standard as they measured manually.

Sabura of BJMC secured first place clocking 5 mins 16:72 seconds to break the previous record of 5 mins 25:57 seconds.

In the men's 200m individual medley, Rubel Rana of Bangladesh Navy finished first ahead of Kamal Hossain of Bangladesh Army and Hamid Ripon of Navy. Rubel won with a time of 2 mins 17:28 secs.

Rubel also completed the double by winning the 400m freestyle.

The men's 200m butterfly went to Jewel Ahmed of Bangladesh Navy.
