Thursday's Police Action on Bhasani University Students
Protests mount, arrested students sent to jail

Different political parties in Tangail held demonstrations and rallies in Tangail yesterday protesting the police action on students of Maulana Bhasani University of Science and Technology (MBUST) on Thursday in which at least 50 people including five teachers were injured.

The teachers including Asaduzzaman Sadi, Chairman of Life Science Faculty, were injured when they tried to save the students. Police arrested 13 students during the clashes. They were later sent to jail.

After the clashes, the MBUST authorities closed the institute till October 14 and asked all students to leave their dormitories by Friday.

Tangail Sadar thana Sub-inspector Fazlul Kabir filed a case under the Speedy Trial Tribunal on Thursday night, accusing 150 students including the arrested 13.

The arrested students are: Isha Aziz, Zahiduzzaman, Mohammad Suman, Tarekuzzaman, Jahangir, Sabuj, Kazi Nurul Islam, Abu Adam Bhuiyan, Yousuf Ali, Nurul Amin, Sajib Sarkar, Rezaul, and Rafiqul Islam.

Of them, Jahangir, Rezaul, Rafiqul Islam, Kazi Nurul Islam and Sabuj were injured during the clashes and were admitted to Tangail General Hospital under police guard.

The police action sparked protest in the district town.

Tangail district Awami League (AL) and Jatiya Party (Earshad) brought out a procession in Tangail town yesterday protesting the police action. The processionists paraded different streets and chanted various slogans.

Later the parties also held a joint press conference at the district AL office demanding punishment to the persons responsible for the incident. It was addressed by, among others, Tangail district AL secretary Fazlur Rahman Khan Faruque, and JP (Ershad) secretary Abdus Salam Chakladar.

Sarbodolio Chhatra Oikkya, a students' body from all parties in Tangail, brought out a procession and held a rally yesterday morning at Niralar square in the town, demanding immediate removal of the MBUST Vice Chancellor (VC), unconditional release the arrested students and withdrawal of the 'false' case against them. Leaders of AL and JP were also present at the rally.

The rally was addressed by Tangail Chhatra League President Faruque Hossen Manik and secretary Abdur Rouf; Jatiya Chhatra Samaj (JCS) President Ripon Ahmed and secretary Shah Alam, Shakil Mridha of MBUST and Maulana Bhasani's grandson Hazrat Ali.

Speakers at the rally alleged that police attacked innocent students demanding reduction of fees, enhanced by former VC Dr Khalilur Rahman.

They also alleged that the police action was uncalled for and without any provocation. The VC did not hold a scheduled meeting with the agitating students but allowed police to charge batons on them, they said. This has damaged the academic atmosphere on the campus.

Earlier, Chhatra Andolon, student wing of Kader Siddiky's Krishak Sramik Janata League, brought out a protest procession in the town and held a press conference at Tangail Press Club on Friday, demanding removal of the VC and a judicial probe into the incident. It was addressed by Chhatra Andolon Secretary Arif Iqbal Alamgir.

The Vice Chancellor was not on the campus during the incident. He had gone to Dhaka on an official work, sources on the campus said.

On return on Friday, he told local journalists, "I regret the police action on students. I requested the SP to release the arrested students but they are yet to be released", the VC added.

Talking to journalists yesterday, Tangail Police Superintendent Mirza Abdullah-hel Baki however claimed that knowing about students' agitation, he rushed to the campus and tried to talk to them but they attacked him (SP) and opened fire, forcing law enforcer to go for action.

The SP also claimed that Magistrate Kazi Nurunnahar and seven policemen were also injured during the violence.
