Rift in Satkhira BNP widens
General secretary declared 'unwanted' in Shyamnagar

The rift in Satkhira BNP has widened as leaders of a rival faction at a press conference declared district BNP general secretary 'unwanted' in Shyamnagar upazila.

The leaders also vowed to resist political activities by him in the upazila. Satkhira BNP is divided into two groups, one led by its president Habibul Islam Habib MP and former general secretary Syed Iftekhar Ali and the other by general secretary Rahmatullah Polash.

Shyamnagar upazila BNP Convener Abdul Wahed belonging to Habibul Islam faction in a written statement at the press conference at Shyamnagar on Thursday alleged that Rahmat Ullah Polash, defying the upazila BNP committee, arranged a meeting of Upazila Matsajibi Dal (fishermen's front of BNP) on September 23.

Wahed also alleged that Polash is making fortune by capturing shrimp enclosures, taking money from unemployed youths in the name of giving jobs. This is damaging the party image, he said.

"Besides, he is sheltering anti-social elements and criminals in the party", he alleged, saying this is creating a rift in the rank and files in the party.

"So we are boycotting him and declaring him unwanted in Shyamnagar in the interest of the party", he added.

Discontent is brewing among party leaders and activists for his (Polash) anti-party activities, Wahed also he alleged.

At 46 leaders and activists of Shyamnagar upazila BNP unit were present at the press conference.

Later talking to this correspondent, party insiders said that due to internal feud, a full fledged Satkhira district BNP committee could not be formed even 16 months after announcement of names of Habibul Islam Habib MP and Rahmatullah Palash as its president and general secretary respectively.

The party high command repeatedly urged the leaders to close ranks and form a full fledged district committee, but to no result, they said.
