60 km human chain for sanitation


It was a unique day for the people of Assassuni, a remotest upazila in the district as thousands of people formed a 60 kilometre long human chain and held a rally yesterday to attain 100 percent sanitation in the upazila.

Local lawmaker Maulana Riasat Ali joined the human chain at Kulla. It was organised by Assassuni Upazila Parishad.

Thousands of enthusiastic people of all walks of life joined the human chain formed on both sides of the road from Kulla to Assassuni upazila headquarters and roads from Assassuni to Bardal, Pratapnagar, Shovnalli, Sreula, Dargapur, Kadakati and Bangdah.

Later a rally was held in front of the Upazila Parishad office with Assassuni UNO Iqbal Hossain in the chair.

Satkhira Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Ilias was the chief guest. It was addressed by among others UP Chairmen Shahidul Islam Pintu, Rafiqul Islam, Alhaj Jalal Uddin Gazi, Abdul Hannan, Ruhul Quddus, Yunus Ali Sana, Abu Hena Shakil and Quddus Gazi.

They emphasised the need for creating mass awareness to bring the upazila under cent percent sanitation coverage, which is not possible without participation of all people irrespective of their social status.
