Step up drive to check food adulteration

Speakers at a meeting yesterday called for intensifying the drive to check permanently the production and sale of adulterated foods across the country.They demanded of the government to incorporate the civil society and citizens' organisations with the ongoing drive against food adulteration to make it a complete success. The meeting on 'Present perspective of the government's ongoing drive against adulterated foods' was organised by Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (Bapa), an environmental organisation, at its office at Lalmatia in the city. Presided over by Bapa President Prof Mozaffer Ahmed, the meeting was addressed by Bapa's founder president AMA Muhit, General Secretary Mohidul Haque Khan, Prof Kazi Saleh Ahmed, Magistrate Md Rokan Ud Doulah, General Secretary of Consumers Association of Bangladesh Kazi Faruque and Prof Asif Nazrul of Dhaka University. " Poverty is not the reason for food adulteration, rather our culture as well as our ignorance are equally responsible for it," said Prof Mozaffer Ahmed. He thanked Md Rokan Ud Doulah for conducting his mobile court against food adulteration with honesty and bravery. The meeting decided to organise a grand procession and rally within 10 days with a view to creating strong public opinion against food adulteration. It also decided to arrange a seminar by this month to scrutinise the existing laws relating to safe foods.
