Ahsanul Haque Minu
An acclaimed actor

It was a night to remember when popular Indian film director Gautam Ghosh selected me for his film Padma Nadir Majhi. On our first meeting he didn't say a word but gesticulated that he liked me," says a nostalgic Ahsanul Haque Minu. He played the role of Gonsha in that film, adapted from the classic novel by Manik Badyapadhyay. Talented actor Minu may not have a high profile as an actor, but his performances in the acclaimed films including Chitra Nadir Parey, Lal Shalu, Adhiar, Duratta and Jayjatra prove his outstanding histrionic capability.Minu embarked into acting through the theatre group Bagura Natya Goshthi. When he came to Dhaka in 1980, he joined Theatre (Arambagh). Among the noteworthy plays he acted in are Jamidar Darpan, Shat Ghater Kanakori, Rupbhan and King Liar. Soon in 1996 he joined another theatre group, Natyajan. After acting in Ekjan Pyramid and Gritang Pribet, the play Tebhagar Pala was staged, the first and so far the last play under his direction. According to Minu, "This play was the result of my 20-year acting career. It was about the revolutionary Tebhaga Movement of the farmers that never succeeded in the capitalist world. After this movement began in 1944, it was strengthened in 1947 in different areas of Bangladesh. We wanted to inform the people about the history of this movement." Minu says that the approach of the play is very positive because at the end of the story the farmers achieve their goal. Minu also has a special memory related to the play. He says, "The legendary Santal leader Ila Mitra, who was one of the prominent leaders of this movement watched this play when we staged it in the Girish Mancha of Kolkata." It was like a dream come true for Minu. He still remembers that an emotional Ila Mitra asked the organisers, "Why did you call me to see this play? Why did you remind me of all those eventful days?" Another memorable event of Minu's life is being in the cast of Padma Nadir Majhi, the most talked about film of 1993. He didn't know anything about the film a second before he was chosen for the role. Minu says, "It was a wintry night in 1991. After one of my shows of Rakkhushi, Keramat Meola insisted that I take a ride with him in a car. There was a black out in the city that night. I could not see where we were going until our car came to a halt in front of a house. I met Gautam Ghosh for the first time there. After a quick look at me from my head to toes, he gave a thumbs up gesture to show his appreciation." Minu didn't know much about his role in the film until Raisul Islam Asad, who played the protagonist in the film, told him that he would play the part of Gonsha. The shooting was held in Paturia of Manikganj district. In the 27 days of shooting Minu could not change his clothes since he led the life of a fisherman and identified with the character. Like all the other actors of the film, he became a part of the fishermen's community beside Padma river. Minu has acted in about 150 TV plays so far including the ongoing serials Titumirer Bansher Kella, Baioscope, Britto and Shampurno Rangin. Among his upcoming ventures, films Onkar and Rani Kuthir Baki Itihash will give the viewers the chance to enjoy Minu's performance.
