Manik new MSC coach

Mohammedan Sporting Club on Wednesday appointed Shafiqul Islam Manik as their new football coach till December 2006.

Manik, who was sacked by Muktijoddha Sangsad in the middle of the Premier Football League after a ten-year stint, returns to his old club as the fourth coach in seven months.

The Black and Whites sacked Korean coach Man Young Kang in March and had Mohammad Panir and Saiful Bari Titu as interim coaches before Jashimuddin Joshi took charge.

Joshi, the former national winger, resigned after the Motijheel side finished runners-up in the Premier League, their best result of the season after failing to qualify for the finals of two previous tournaments.

Manik, who played for Mohammedan from 1986 to 1994, worked as assistant coach for two years before becoming a legend at Muktijoddha.

"My target is to build a strong team for the next season. Now, I have to go for the National League with the players I have," Manik told reporters after he had signed a deal at the Mohammedan club tent on Wednesday.

"I have seen them from outside but nine players of the team are now on national duty. So we need hard work and maximum efforts from the remaining players to do well in the National League.

"I have played under pressure and it was nothing new for me as a coach. So I am hopeful about my task," he added.

Mohammedan general secretary Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan said that they have appointed the best coach in the country after a thorough review.

"We want good result and that is why we have given him the job," Lokman told.

Mohammedan have retained Imtiaz Sultan Johnny as their football manager.
