1,683 HR violations against women in last 3 months
Says MMC report

A total of 1,683 incidents of human rights violations against women, most of those on dowry and divorce related matters, occurred all over the country in the last three months as of September this year. According to the newspaper reports monitored by the Massline Media Centre (MMC), a non-government organisation, 754 women were killed and 556 were injured during the period. The NGO's study was based on 12 national and 196 local newspapers. The MMC report, published this month, said 573 cases were filed and 496 accused were arrested in this connection. The latest study revealed that repressions on women came down in the last three months than that of the previous quarter. "Eight women were killed and 18 repressed everyday in July-September this year while nine were killed and 22 repressed daily in April-June quarter", the study added. According to categorical analysis of the cases of 269 females related to dowry and divorce, 156 of them were killed and 90 others injured following physical assault. The highest number of dowry incidents took place in Rajshahi division while the lowest numbers occurred in Sylhet. During the period, 227 women were raped and of them, 39 were killed, said the report, adding 91 women fell victim to gang rape and of them, 14 died. Some 72 females were sexually abused and of them, 27 were injured and two were killed. Khulna topped the list in committing such crime. A total of 245 committed suicide during the period and of them, highest number of 107 suicide cases took place in Rajshahi division. During the last three months, at least 54 women fell victim to acid violence, six more than previous quarter, while 51 females were kidnapped and 30 others have been trafficked. Besides, 14 women fell victim to 'fatwa' and 138 females were forcibly engaged in terrorist activities.
