A documentary on a songbird, Hooded Pitta, locally known as Halti, was screened at the Liberation War Museum auditorium in the city yesterday. Sharif Khan, an ornithologist, made the documentary titled 'Nest of Hooded Pitta' after his 27 years of research. The scientific name of the bird is Pitta Sordida. Although the bird is found in southwestern region of the country, particularly in Bagerhat district, it is rarely seen in other parts of the country. Interestingly, this beautiful bird builds its nest on the ground, not on the tree. Its melodious song can be heard at night and it can sing 11 different tunes. The Bangladesh Banyaprani Raksha Samity (Committee to preserve wildlife), Bangladesh Wild Club, Lovebird Club and Wildlife Club jointly organised the documentary show and a discussion. For the first time in the country, the life cycle of Hooded Pitta has been captured in the camera of Sharif Khan. The bird has long been a resident of Bagerhat district and breeding, the speakers said at the discussion. Cultural activist Mofidul Haque presided over the discussion. Prof Qazi Zaker Hossain of Dhaka University was present as chief guest while noted artist Hashem Khan and columnist Belal Chowdhury as special guests.
