Attack for toll during Durga Puja protested

At least 300 members of the Hindu community yesterday brought out a procession here protesting Thursday’s attack on some members by a group of miscreants for non-payment of illegal toll during Durga Puja at Bajunia village in the Sadar upazila.The procession started from Bajunia village, 20-kilometre off the district town and terminated near the Deputy Commissioner's (DC) residence. A rally was held their. Speakers at the rally alleged that at least 20 people were injured, two of them critically. They are now at Gopalganj Sadar Hospital. They demanded arrest and punishment to the culprits. The demonstration also staged a sit- in front of the office of Superintendent of Police (SP) demanding security of their lives and property. After the meeting the demonstrators submitted a memorandum to the DC. In the memorandum, they said their lives are at stake due to attack of the criminals by sharp weapons. They named the attackers as Rabbani, Bhuiyan, Yahiya Bhuiyan, Sarfin Bhuiyan, Elam Bhuiyan, Jakaria Bhuiyan, sons of Mozid Bhuyan, Paritosh Biswas, son of Baburam Biswas, Dipak Kirtonia, son of Sushil Kirtania, Somir Biswas, son of Narad Biswas, Mohan Mallik, son of Abani Mallik, Subodh Biswas, son Monoranjan Biswas, Ranajit Mallik and Bibek Mallik, son of Kalipada Mallik, Mrinal Bagchi, son of Sarat Bagchi and Bishnupada Biswas, son Pulin Biswas. However, District BNP President M H Khan Manju met the sit-in demonstrators in front of the SP's office and assured proper steps against the culprits after visiting Bajunia village on October 22 next. The demonstrators also alleged that the criminals felled 60 roadside Mehagani trees, but they were insulted for protesting the act.
