Biman official held for 'carjacking'
3 stolen cars recovered

Police on Friday night arrested a Bangladesh Biman official in Dhaka for his alleged involvement in carjacking and seized three stolen vehicles he kept at some garages.

According to the police, Golam Nasser Azmir alias Parvez, 42, junior ground service officer of Biman, has been involved in carjacking in the capital for quite a long time.

Acting on a tip-off, Ramna police arrested Quddus Ali, 25, an accomplice of Parvez, at his Ulan Road house in Khilgaon at about 9:00pm on Friday. Following Ali's confession, Ramna police then nabbed Parvez from his house in the same area.

After quizzing the two, police raided a garage, owned by Abdus Quddus, at Tejgaon Industrial Area and recovered a stolen car.

The police team then raided two more garages at Dhanmondi and in Gazipur and seized two more stolen vehicles with Dhaka Metro number plates.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdullahel Baki of Ramna Police Station told The Daily Star that police were confirmed about Parvez's being a Biman official after checking his visiting card and talking to his family members.

"We are convinced he is involved in carjacking as we recovered three stolen vehicles following his statement," he said.

"Parvez said he had link with a garage owner whom he sold the cars," said Baki adding, "But we are cross-checking some information he gave us, which we believe to be false."

When contacted, Ahsan Quadir, director of administration, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, told The Daily Star that he was not aware of the incident. "If any Biman official is arrested for any reason, we usually take departmental action against him," he said.
