Sayeed for ban on Jamaat politics

Awami League (AL) leader and former state minister for information Prof Abu Sayeed has strongly condemned the statement given by 40 Jamaat leaders in which they termed the demand for banning the politics of Jamaat and Chhatra Shibir 'provocative' and 'illogical'.

In a statement yesterday, Abu Sayeed said Jamaat, the mother organisation of the Islamist militants, must not be allowed to do politics for the greater interest of the nation and its sovereignty.

He demanded implementation of the unanimous resolution of banning the politics of Jamaat and Shibir adopted in the Jatiya Sangsad in 1993.

The AL leader said the demand for banning the politics of Jamaat-Shibir is not a new issue. It is the basic demand of the freedom-loving people.

Thirty-three lawmakers including Prof AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, then deputy leader of the House, BNP leaders Major (rtd) Hafiz Uddin, Ashraf Hossain, Shahjahan Siraj and Sirajul Islam of Islami Oikya Jote took part in the discussion in the Jatiya Sangsad from September 19 to 23 in 1993 in support of banning the politics of Jamaat-Shibir.

He said Jamaat is still practising the politics of killing in the guise of religion. The patronisation and support of Jamaat to the Islamist militants has resulted in the rise of extremism in the country.

Considering the prevailing situation in the country, it is necessary to ban the politics of Jamaat-Shibir, he added.
