Unite for war against corruption: Dr Kamal

Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday declared 2006 as the 'Year of Freedom from Injustice' urging people from all walks of life to be united for a war against corruption, political rivalry and social injustice.

Speaking as chief guest at city wards conference of Gono Forum and Jatiya Oikya Mancha at Dhaka Bar Association auditorium, he said only one percent of the total population of the country are grabbing all wealth and power creating a huge disparity between the rich and poor.

"Their greed for power and money has gone beyond any limit. That is why they do not hesitate to kill their rivals in the elections and loot the wealth of the poor," said the eminent jurist.

Due to extortion and hoarding, the price of essentials has gone up making the life of the common people miserable, while the farmers are not getting due price of their products, he observed.

"We fought against Pakistani occupation regimes as we were deprived of social, political and economic justice, but we are still deprived of the same when our own people are ruling the country," Dr Kamal regretted.

Recalling the contribution of leaders like Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardi and Sher-e-Bangla, he said, " Time has come when we the people of good will should approach the common man to root out all evil forces and corruption from the country."

Some people are doing politics with religion and blasting bombs and grenades to kill people, Dr Kamal said, adding, "Killing people is forbidden in all religions, but these evil forces are teaching the poor youths that this is the way of Allah and thus pushing them towards destruction."

He said the number of bad people in the society is small, but one of their policies is to divide the people of good will.

"This is how the society is divided into many quarters," he observed.

Gono Forum General Secretary Saifuddin Ahmed Manik criticised the BNP-Jamaat alliance saying that it is out to rig the next national polls.

"The government has extended the retirement age of the judges so that Justice KM Hasan who is a partisan man could be made the chief of the next caretaker government. Similarly, Justice MA Aziz who has been made chief election commissioner is now busy in making the fresh voter list suspiciously without the consent of the other commissioners," he said.

The government is also appointing police and public servants on political ground, he added.

Gono Forum and Jatiya Oikya Mancha leaders Pankaj Bhattacharya, SM Altaf Hossain, Mostafa Manwar Montu, Engineer Abul Kashem, Saidur Rahman Sayeed, Saleh Ahmed, Subrata Chowdhury, former whip Abdur Rouf, Porimal Guha and Monjur Ahmed Monju also spoke at the conference.
