Speaker rejects talks on opposition demands
Turns down all notices

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Jamiruddin Sircar yesterday rejected all the opposition lawmakers' demands for discussion in parliament on different issues, including rise of militants and price hike of essentials.

The speaker categorically said the government is trying hard to control the price hike of essentials and improve the power and gas crises situation.

"So, there is no need for holding any discussion on these issues, adjourning other businesses of the House," he told the House, disposing of the opposition lawmakers' notices.

The Awami League (AL) and Jatiya Party (JP) lawmakers in their notices said people are living in a distressed situation due to the skyrocketing prices of essentials and shortage of power and gas.

Referring to the lawmakers' demand for discussion on militant activities, Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh's threat to blow out police stations across the country and killing of two judges in Jhalakathi, the speaker said the government intelligence agencies have already started a massive hunt to arrest the militant kingpins. The police administration has also arrested a person involved with the killing of the two judges, he noted.

"So, it is not possible to hold any discussion on these issues in parliament," he said, adding that it is possible to get remedy under the existing law on some issues.

AL lawmaker Panchanon Bisaws, JP (Ershad) lawmaker GM Quader, Mashiur Rahman Ranga and Golam Habib Dulal had submitted 29 notices to the parliament secretariat, demanding discussions on the issues.
