116 mostly Bangladeshis arrested in Singapore

Singapore immigration officials raided a makeshift dormitory and arrested 116 mostly Bangladeshi men in the largest blitz of its kind here, a report said Wednesday.

The raid early Tuesday morning netted 114 men and two Thai women.

Of the 116 arrested, 14 had valid immigration documents but the rest did not, the Straits Times reported.

Many were overstayers although at least 14 had entered Singapore illegally.

The group had been living in squalid offices that had been turned into dormitories, with up to 14 people to a room.

The man who rented them the premises has been referred to police for allegedly harbouring immigration offenders, the report said.

Immigration officials were not immediately available for comment.

Those found guilty of overstaying or illegal entry in Singapore can be jailed for up to six months and receive at least three strokes of the cane.
