EU lawmakers back measures to liberalise services

European Union lawmakers took a step Tuesday towards opening up the 25-nation bloc's vast market in services to greater cross-border competition, in a move to boost sluggish economic growth.

The European Parliament's internal market committee approved an amended version of a bill first proposed by former EU Internal Market Commissioner Frits Bolkestein which caused fierce political controversy earlier this year.

Socialist and Communist legislators were defeated in a bid to gut the measure by removing the central principle that firms may provide services based on their home country laws.
