On the occasion, a doamahfil and discussion will be held today on his graveyard premises at 9:00am today. Distinguished personalities including litterateurs, lawyers and politicians will take part in the discussion commemorating Ataur Rahman.

Besides, a discussion programme will be aired in the state-run BTV today with the participation of Law Minister Moudud Ahmed and Jute and Textile Minister Shahjahan Siraj

Born on March 6, 1905 at Balia under Dhamrai upazila in Dhaka district, Ataur Rahman passed matriculation from Pogose High School in Dhaka in 1924 and completed Intermediate Arts Examination from Jagannath College in 1926.

After obtaining bachelor degree in laws, he joined Dhaka Bar in 1937.

He joined Muslim League in 1944 and was elected district Muslim League vice president.

In 1949 he became one of the founder vice presidents of Awami Muslim League and presided over the convention, which announced the formation of the then East Pakistan Aawami Musliam League. As prime minister he attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference held in Papua New Guinea in 1983.

Besides, Ataur Rahman had a keen interest in literature. He wrote hundreds of articles in newspapers and periodicals both in Bangla and English. He also published four books-- Ojarotir Dui Bochhar, Shoiracharar Dosh Bachhar, Oboruddher Noy Mash and Prodhan Montritter Noy Mash.

On this day in 1991 Ataur Rahman passed away.
