Transport leader shot dead in city

A gang of unidentified assailants shot a transport leader to death and injured two others in the city's Mirpur area yesterday evening.Rafiqul Islam Monir,40, a transport leader, was attacked in front of his office near Sweden Plaza at Mirpur 10. He died on the spot while his younger brother Mizanur Rahman, 25, was injured. Shihabuddin, a khadem of Baitulmamur Jame Masjid at Mirpur, was bullet hit in the incident. Shihab was rushed to Dhaka medical College Hospital and Mizan admitted to local clinic Al Helal Hospital. "As I stepped out of the Kashmiri Biryani house, a gang of six to seven armed with firearms started firing at a man. Chased by the local people, the goons began to fire at us and a bullet hit my leg," said injured Shihabuddin. Rafiq's wife Aklima Akhter told the journalists that her husband was killed over a land dispute with one Amir Hossain Mollah. Mirpur police said they visited the spot but could not arrest anyone in this connection.
