Raarang: Struggles of the Santals take centre stage

Preview of tonight’s play:
The ongoing 10-day theatre festival ends today with the staging of Raarang, an Aranyak Natya Dal production. Mamunur Rashid's play depicts the story of oppression on the Santals: the indigenous people living in the northern part of Bangladesh.

Raarang -- a Santal word meaning battle cry -- depicts the strife of the impoverished Santals against oppression, such as feudalism, religion and so on, which have been imposed by the dominating Bangalees. Through the true story of Alfred Shoren, the playwright has portrayed an attempt of a revolution against discrimination. However, the 'battle cry' fails in the face of treachery of the Bangalees.

Mamunur Rashid directs Raarang. Faiz Zahir is the set and light designer of the play.

Raarang will be staged today at 6:30pm at the Experimental Theatre Stage.
