8 killed in road crashes


Eight persons were killed and over 50 were injured in four road accidents in Cox's Bazar and Gopalganj in the last three days.

Five people, including two women, were killed in three accidents in Cox's Bazar while three others were killed in another road accident on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway at Kashiani of Gopalganj.

Our Cox's Bazar correspondent reports: A speedy car hit Ayesha Begum, 60, wife of Mojaher Mia, and Noor Jahan, 55, wife of Najir Ahmed--both from Lohagora of the district--yesterday on the Cox's Bazar-Chittagong Highway. The two died on the spot.

Four others--Chaman Ara Begum, 25, Lovely Akter, 15, Rekha, 8, and Akter Ahmed, 12--were critically injured in the accident and were undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical Collage and Hospital (CMCH), police said.

In another accident, Mohammed Mostafa, 28, son of Taher Patwari, Lama and Kabir were run over by several vehicles on the Rupashi Para-Lama road. Seven others were critically injured in the incident.

On December 18, one Fazal Ahmed, 60, of Naitong Para of Teknaf was killed in a head-on collision between two jeeps on the Teknaf-Cox's Bazar road, while five others were seriously injured. The injured were admitted to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital and CMCH.

Our correspondent in Gopalganj reports: Three persons died and around 50 others were injured in a fatal road accident on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway at Kashiani of the district.

Local people and police sources said a Bhatiapara-bound bus from Gopalganj yesterday fell into the roadside ditch near Bhatiapara petrol pump at Kashiani as its driver lost control.

Amjad Hossain, 55, of Kashiani, Emon Mondol, 40, of Lougharjang upazila of Munshiganj, and Achinta Biswas, 40, of Shailakupa upazila of Jhenidah died on the spot.

Of the 50 injured, 33 were admitted to Faridpur Medical College and Hospital and Gopalganj Sadar Hospital, sources said.
