Christmas today

The Christian community of Bangladesh, as elsewhere in the world, celebrates Christmas today in commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is the most important holiday for all the Christians of the world.

According to Christian beliefs the god entered the world of men through his son, Jesus Christ, on Christmas Day. But it is also a celebration of rebirth, new beginnings, forgiveness and peace as a new year approaches. It is an occasion for the Christians to renew their relationship with god and with their fellow humans.

Tight security measures have been taken throughout the capital and at divisional and district headquarters to ensure peaceful celebrations. Members of the police and Rapid Action Battalion have been deployed to ensure safety. Plainclothes policemen and other intelligence officials have been keeping their eyes on all the churches across the country.

The day's festive activities include decoration of Christmas trees, special church prayers, distribution of gifts by Santa Claus to children, family gatherings and Christmas Day feasts. The government has declared the day a public holiday.

In separate message President Dr Iajuddin Ahmed, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and leader of the opposition Sheikh Hasina greeted the Christian community of Bangladesh on the eve of the day and said that Jesus Christ had worked for establishing humanity and peace.

Different organisations including Bangladesh Christian Association, Bangladesh Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Oikya Parishad, and Chhatra Jubo Oikya Parishad offered greetings to the Christian community, wishing them a merry Christmas.

Archbishop Poulinus Costa, head of the Christian community in the country said, "Jesus came into the world to bring peace by sacrifice and forgiveness". He prayed that god would bless Bangladesh.

The Dhaka Sheraton Hotel will hold a children's party today in its Marble Room from 10:00am to 1:00pm, featuring Santa Claus, puppet shows, magic shows, puzzle shows, and singing of carols, said a press release.

Bangladesh Television, Radio Bangladesh, as well as private TV channels will broadcast special Christmas Day programmes, while national dailies will publish supplements highlighting the significance of the holiday.
