Submitting daily transaction details to BB may hurt banks

Complying with the recent Bangladesh Bank's (BB) directive related to submitting daily transaction details of banks to the BB may cast a negative impact on the banks, fears Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB).

The annual general meeting of BAB yesterday also expressed concern about some other issues and decided to meet the BB governor and chairman of National Board of Revenue (NBR) to discuss the issues.

The BB last week directed the commercial banks to provide it with information on any transactions amounting to Tk five lakh and above against any account, otherwise they will have to face penalty.

Another recent regulation made in the current budget that makes it mandatory for the banks to keep provision up to one percent against bad and doubtful loans also came for discussion.

BAB member and Chairman of NCC Bank Wazhiullah Bhuiyan last night told The Daily Star that the profitability of the banks will suffer due to the mandatory provisioning. Again, clients will be frightened to do transactions with the banks, if daily report on cash transaction has to be submitted to the BB, he added.
