Indian home minister visits Tinbigha

Indian Home Minister Shivraj Patil yesterday visited the Tinbigha corridor in Coochbehar district of West Bengal and crossed over to Panbari check-post in Patgram in Bangladesh where he met senior officials of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR).The BDR personnel at Panbari gave a guard of honour to Patil, who arrived in an Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter from Siliguri in the morning. He was accompanied by Coochbehar District Magistrate Dr Ravinder Singh and officials of Border Security Force (BSF). The minister signed the visitor's book at the specially constructed camp at the check-post. He took tea with the BDR officials there and received gifts from them. Earlier, Patil visited the Bheem border outpost on the Indian side and was given a guard of honour by the BSF. The Tinbigha corridor was handed over to Bangladesh on June 26, 1992 for use of Bangladeshi citizens to travel to Dahagram and Angarpota enclaves from mainland Bangladesh. Patil, who reached Siliguri on Monday, is on a three-day trip to northern part of West Bengal to review the fencing work along the border with Bangladesh and to take stock of the border situation.
