14-party defers Dhaka long march to Feb 5

The 'Dhaka long march' sponsored by the Awami League-led 14-party opposition combine as part of their oust-government movement has been deferred to February 5 from January 22 in view of Biswa Ijtema.

Talking to reporters after a meeting with leaders of the alliance that took the decision, opposition leader Sheikh Hasina said Awami League will take the decision whether to return to parliament or quit at an appropriate time.

"We will take the decision when time will come," she said as her allies suggested that Awami League should go to next session of parliament and present the reform proposals on caretaker government and the Election Commission (EC).

Hasina asked the EC to immediately stop the preparation of voter list, saying that the chief election commissioner and the EC secretary are engaged in a conspiracy to drop AL supporters and minority people from the voter roll being prepared by "cadres of BNP and Shibir and police".

The opposition leader also brought allegation against them of plundering Tk 164 crore in the name of preparing fresh voter roll. "How the EC could go for preparing the voter list despite writ petitions filed with the High Court against it?"

On reform proposals, Hasina said the government must accept the reform of caretaker government system and the Election Commission to ensure free and fair elections and constitutional rights of the people.

The opposition leader once again demanded UN enquiry into all bomb and grenade attacks, including those of August 21, killing of Shah AMS Kibria, attack on the

British high commissioner, serial bombings on August 17, October 3 and suicide attacks killing judges, lawyers, police and commoners in Jhalkathi, Gazipur and Chittagong.

"We still believe that the government is the main patron of militancy. And if the government does not invite the UN enquiry into these attacks, it will expose the links between the government and militants," she said.

Hasina alleged that Bangla Bhai and Shaekh Abdur Rahman are in custody of the government and its intelligence agencies.

The opposition leader called for intensifying the movement to restore people's right to vote and remove the "repressive and corrupt regime".

"People no longer want to see the government in power in the wake of terrorism and unabated price hike of essentials," she said.

Earlier, 14-party leaders Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta and Abdul Jalil of Awami League, Rashed Khan Menon of Workers Party, Hasanul Huq Inu and Syed Zafar Sajjad of JSD, Saifuddin Ahmed Manik and Pankaj Bhattacharya of Gono Forum, Nurul Islam of Gonotantri Party and Alhaj Abdus Samad of Gono Azadi League were present at the meeting at Sudha Sadan.
