3 BCL leaders assaulted

Three leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Jagannath Hall unit of Dhaka University were injured when activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) beat them yesterday.The injured are DU unit member Pradip Biswas Titu, Jagannath Hall Organising Secretary Pranab Saha and Publicity Secretary Mrinal Tanchanga. Both Pranab and Pradip were admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) with severe injures in their bodies. Hall sources said some JCD activists led by Uttam Chakma beat Mrinal in the early hours following an altercation between Mrinal and JCD activist Sukanta Das. At 1:15pm, some BCL activists threatened Sukanta for beating Mrinal. At this, a group of some 20 JCD activists along with some outsiders beat Pradip with iron rods and hockey sticks at the main entrance of the hall. The same JCD group also beat Pranab at the hall canteen when he was having lunch. BCL leaders told The Daily Star at the DMCH that they were beaten at the direction of the hall unit JCD president and general secretary. Top BCL leaders visited the DMCH and demanded immediate punishment to JCD men. The BCL also brought out a procession from the DMCH that marched different roads on the campus protesting the incidents. BCL President Liakot Sikdar and General Secretary Nazrul Islam Babu, in a joint statement, condemned the incidents. They said the JCD attacks were aimed at foiling today's founding anniversary programmes of the BCL.
