Govt trying to snatch people's voting rights
Says Hasina on return from hajj

Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina yesterday said the BNP-Jamaat alliance government is trying to snatch the people's constitutional right to franchise through manipulating the voter list.

"The chief election commissioner, with direction from the government, has continued voter listing violating the High Court's order," Hasina, who is also the chief of the main opposition Awami League (AL), told journalists at the Zia International Airport on her return from Saudi Arabia after performing Hajj.

"The BNP-Jamaat alliance government had come to power by rigging votes in the past election and now they are manipulating the voter list to win the next election," she said.

People must resist such move, she said, adding that they will not allow the alliance government to snatch people's constitutional right to vote.

Accusing the government of creating problems for the hajj pilgrims, the AL chief said, "The government created trouble while doing business during the Hajj."

Hasina said she witnessed how the Bangladeshi hajj pilgrims suffered in Saudi Arabia due to lack of facilities including water, food, transport and accommodation that are to be provided by the government.

She said she felt for the people who could not celebrate Eid-ul-Azha due to spiralling price of essentials.

Senior party leaders including AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil MP, Zillur Rahman, Abdur Razzak MP, Tofail Ahmed, Motia Chowdhury, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim MP, Suranjit Sengupta MP, Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, Obaidul Quader, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, leaders of AL front organisations and party activists were present at the airport to receive the AL chief.
