In a message on the occasion, President Iajuddin Ahmed paid glowing tributes to the memory of Zia.

He said Ziaur Rahman, who became leader of the country during a serious crisis in 1975, restored democracy and ensured freedom of press.

"He then formed Bangladesh National Party (BNP) for uniting the countrymen, giving priority to national interest," the president said.

BNP has drawn up elaborate programmes, marking the birth anniversary of the late leader.

The programmes include hoisting of party flag on the party offices, placing wreaths and offering fateha at the majar of Ziaur Rahman, and illumination of the party offices.
