No election can be free, fair under CEC: AL

Terming the Election Commission 'a front organisation of the ruling BNP', the main opposition Awami League and its front organisations yesterday said they would not allow any election in the country unless the chief election commissioner (CEC) and the two 'politically' appointed election commissioners are removed.

At a meeting with all the front organisations at the party's central office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city, the AL leaders observed that no election can be free and fair under this CEC and the new election commissioners.

"We will force the CEC and the two politically appointed commissioners to quit. No election would be held in the country unless they resign and the government meet our demands for electoral reforms," AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil told journalists after the meeting.

At present, the election commission is working as an organisation loyal to the BNP, he added.

The meeting termed the appointments of two election commissioners 'politically motivated' and a part of the election engineering conspiracy by the BNP-Jamaat alliance government.

It also observed that the alliance government is desperate to rig the next election, sources said.

The AL leaders called on the front organisations to launch a door-to-door campaign to make the people aware about the evil design.

The AL leaders also asked the leaders of the front organisations to mobilise support from all in order to make January 22 hartal a success.

Presided over by AL presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, the meeting was also attended by Tofail Ahmed, Motia Chowdhury, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Obaidul Quader, Abdul Mannan and Mofazzel Hossain Chowdhury Maya.
