'Cancel appointments of new election commissioners'

Terming the Election Commission (EC) 'a loyal body of the prime minister', Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) yesterday demanded immediate cancellation of the appointments of two new election commissioners and resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in order to hold a free and fair election in the country.

The BCL, student front of the main opposition Awami League, described the appointments of the two commissioners 'extra-constitutional and politically motivated'.

Addressing a rally in front of its central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in the city, BCL leaders said the BNP-Jamaat alliance government as part of the election engineering conspiracy appointed two controversial persons in the EC to rig the election.

Addressing the rally as chief guest, AL Organising Secretary Abdul Mannan said they would not allow any election in the country until the government cancel the appointments of the CEC and two commissioners and fulfil their demand for reform in the caretaker government system and the EC.

He said the alliance government appointed the CEC in the dark of night and the CEC has proved himself as an 'obedient servant' of the prime minister violating all the norms of the EC.

He said the alliance government is now trying to appoint Justice KM Hasan, a close ally of Ziaur Rahman, as the chief advisor of the caretaker government to snatch the peoples' mandate in the next election.

Dhaka city unit AL General Secretary Mofazzel Hossain Chowdhury Maya, BCL President Liaqat Sikder, General Secretary Nazrul Islam Babu, and other BCL leaders Ishaque Miah, Mamunur Rashid Suvro, Kamrul Hasan Ripon also addressed the rally.
