Factory fire injures 6 in Tejgaon

At least six workers of a label-making factory suffered burns, five of them critically, when a fire broke out at the factory in Tejgaon industrial area early yesterday.

The injured -- Milon Hossain, Mohammad Masud, Saidur Rahman, Noor Alam, Babu and Hanif -- were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

"I heard a bang at 12:35am when we were working inside the tin-shed SRA label industry. Soon thick smoke covered the area and I found fire in my clothes," said label operator Mohammad Masud.

He said he and four other label operators tried to rush out of the factory but found the lone collapsible gate locked. By this time the fire engulfed the whole factory.

Seeing the fire, locals ran to the gate and fortunately one of them found the key on the ground near the entrance.

"I picked up the key, unlocked the gate and took six people out of the factory with the help of other rescuers," said Jahangir Alam.

Factory guard Abdur Rahim said another guard, who was appointed on Thursday, was posted at the gate. He got frightened as the fire broke out and left the factory locking the gate.

Seven fire fighting units from Tejgaon, Mirpur and Baridhara doused the fire after trying for one and a half hours.

Fire service officials said the fire originated from an electric short circuit.

They, however, could not ascertain the loss.
