Form crisis hampers voter enlistment


Voter enlistment is being hampered in Barisal district due to crisis of registration forms, according to enumerators.

A few of them said to this correspondent they could not enlist new voters in their areas for this reason.

Meanwhile, enumerators are allegedly defying the High Court (HC) order and enlisting voters as per Chief Election Commissioner's (CEC) instruction.

'We continue to do our job in the same manner we had been doing just before the HC judgment,' enumerators said.

Barisal district Secretary of Fair Election Monitoring Alliance (FEMA) Enayet Hossain Chowdhury said Md Kabir, a member of Char Hogla ward under Charmonai Union Parishad (UP) accompanied the enumerators and enrolled his supporters in the voter list. The same situation prevailed in Ward No 9,10,14,16 and 30 in the city, he alleged.

Nasima Begum, wife of Murtaza Abedin, Commissioner, Ward No 2 in Kawnia area of the city asked the FEMA observers to desist from duties, he said.

Barisal Government B M College hostel resident student have alleged that JCD cadres led by Mahmud forcibly enlisted the party supporters.

Enumerators allegedly supplied four forms to the family members of Engineer Zakir Hossain of Public Health Engineering Department at his staff quarter in Munshir Garage under Ward No 20. But there are three voters, it has been alleged.

Abdur Rob, a rickshaw-puller and tenant of Faruk Peskar of Gorosthan Road area in the same ward said no enumerator visited his house till filing of this report.

Minor aged Liza, Suma, Mithu, Kawsar, Sumi and Shamim of Gonpara area in Ward No 30 of Kashipur union were allegedly enlisted in the voter list

Eighteen members of a family in Kalmegha Lodge were allegedly enlisted in the list twice.

Moreover, voters of one ward were allegedly enlisted in other wards. Many voters in Charkawa, Chandramohan, Jagua and Kashipur unions of Barisal Sadar upazila also complained that enumerators did not reach their houses as yet.

FEMA observers reported common irregularities of giving false or dual signature instead of thumb impression of illiterate voters, partial enrollment in some families and non-collection of forms.

Even many people complained enumerators came to their houses, but did not enroll their family members and left houses.
