Hatibandha attains cent per cent sanitation


'Hatibandha upazila in Lalmonirhat district has set a unique example by attaining 100 per cent sanitation coverage as well as birth registration'.

Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner M Mosleh Uddin declared this at a function held at Hatibandha SS School and College ground as the chief guest on Wednesday.

Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner (DC) M Fazlul Haque presided over the function.

Decentralised Total Sanitation Project (Dishari), a joint initiative of Plan Bangladesh, Water and Sanitation Programme-The World Bank, Water Aid Bangladesh and Dhaka Ashania Mission provided technical support to local government bodies.

Plan Bangladesh supported the universal birth registration programme in the entire upazila.

While addressing, the chief guest said the success was possible due to concerted effort of Union Parisad (UP), upazila administration, development partners and community people.

'Cent per cent sanitation has been achieved under leadership of local government administration and active participation community people,' he said.

Among others, former Member of Parliament Joinul Abedin Sarker, Superintendent of Police M Mejbah Uddin, Additional Deputy Commissioner Babul Chandra Roy, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Joyonto Kumer Sikder, Plan Bangladesh representative Kazi Nabiul Haque, World Bank representative Shafiul Azam Ahmed and Prof M A Sobhan of Dhaka Ahsania Mission addressed.

Later, the chief guest handed over crests to UP chairmen, representatives of implementing agencies and community catalysts as a recognition to their success.

As many as 5,000 people participated in the function and expressed their determination to attain 100 per cent sanitation and birth registration in the entire district by 2008.
