2 die, 10 fall ill after eating puffer fish

Two children died and 10 others became critically ill after eating poisonous puffer fish at South Gohira in Anwara upazila on Monday night.The dead are Shamima Akhtar, 7, and Forkan, 10. They are the children of two brothers, Saleh Ahmad and Jalal Ahmad. Parveen Akhtar, 22, Mohiuddin, 13, Joynab Akhtar, 16, Touhidul Alam, 5, Irfan, 4, Imran, 7, Selina Akhtar, 20, Osman, 13, Borhan 6, and Farida Akhtar, 17, were admitted to the local health complex following their illness. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kamrul Amin told The Daily Star the twelve people ate the fish around 10.00pm on Monday and started falling sick one after another. Of them Shamima and Forkan died around 9.00am yesterday, he said. An officer on duty at Anwara Police Station, Julhasuddin Khan, told The Daily Star yesterday afternoon that all those who were taking treatment are out of danger now.
