Four members of a family were burnt alive in a fire at a camp of the stranded Pakistanis at Morapara in the capital's Pallabi area early yesterday. The deceased are Salma Begum, 28, her three-year-old daughter Ria and her two brothers, Mohammad Selim, 35, and Mohammad Kalim, 20. At least 10 people suffered injuries while they were trying to extinguish the fire. Witnesses said the four were asleep at a shanty where the fire originated from an electric short circuit at around 2:00am and soon engulfed three other shanties. Locals and students of nearby Reazul Zannat Noorani Madrasa rushed there and extinguished the blaze. "The fire fighters reached the spot at about 2:30am. We doused the fire before their arrival, but we could not save the four lives" Mohamad Sultan, a local, told The Daily Star. "After removing a tin sheet, I found the charred bodies," Sultan said. The body of the baby girl was found under her mother's chest. Perhaps, she tried to save her baby at the last moment, but failed. The fire fighters recovered the bodies and sent them to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. Seven people had been killed in three incidents of fire at the same refugee camp since 1986.
