People, parties pay tribute to Kibria

The first death anniversary of former finance minister and Awami League (AL) lawmaker SAMS Kibria was observed yesterday.Kibria was killed in a grisly grenade attack on an Awami League rally at Boidderbazar in Habiganj on January 27 last year. In the morning, family members of the slain AL leader, including his wife Asma Kibria, son Reza Kibria, and sisters and brothers placed wreaths at his grave at Banani graveyard and offered fateha. Different socio-cultural and political organisations also paid homage to the leader and placed wreaths at the grave. AL central leaders including Abdur Razzak MP, Tofail Ahmed, Abdul Jalil MP, Kazi Jafarullah MP, Motia Chowdhury, Obaidul Kader, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Mirza Azam MP and Asim Kumar Ukil paid tribute to the slain party leader, placed wreaths at his grave and offered fateha. A milad mahfil was held at late Kibria's Dhanmondi residence after Asar prayers. Awami League President and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sheikh Hasina joined the milad. BNP leaders Khondokar Delwar Hossin and Enam Ahmed Chowdhury, AL leaders Johra Tajuddin, Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Abdur Razzaq MP, Tofail Ahmed, ASHK Sadeque MP, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Obaidul Kader, Mostofa Jalal Mohiuddin, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Sohel Taj MP and Prof Nazma Rahman, Workers Party leader Rashed Khan Menon, JSD leaders Syed Jafar Sajjad and Moinuddin Khan Badal, former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) AK Azad Chowdhury, DU teacher AAMS Arefin Siddique, Supreme Court Bar Association President Mahbubey Alam were, among others, present. AL will hold a discussion at Diploma Engineers Institute today with party chief Sheikh Hasina in the chair. Meanwhile, the trial of the Kibria murder case is yet to begin although the government announced last year that the trial of the case, filed after the killing, will be held at Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal.
