One shot dead, 20 injured in Kushtia

One person was shot dead and 20 others were inured, as their rivals sprayed bullets on them at village Nawtabhabanipur in Kumarkhali upazila of the district yesterday.The dead was identified as Abdul Matin 35, son of Sukkur Mahamud. According to police, Matin, a farmer, and Nasir alias 'Langra' Nasir, an alleged cadre of an outlawed party, had a longstanding dispute over ownership of three palm trees near Matin's house. When Matin along with his supporters and family members were felling the trees at noon yesterday, Nasir and his cadres attacked them. They sprayed bullets, killing Matin on the spot and injuring 20 others. The attackers left the scene, firing blank shots. On information, Kumarkhali police went to the spot at about 2:00pm, recovered the body and sent it to Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy. Of the injured, Sariful, Tajuddin, Musa, Matiar, Rafan, Innat Ali, Chand and Hasan Foyez were admitted to Kushtia General Hospital while others given first aid. Police arrested two persons named Nazrul and Kabir. But locals said the arrestees are not the cadres of Nasir. Police have been deployed in the area. A case was filed with Kumarkhali Police Station, accusing 15 cadres of Nasir. Sources said the same group led by Nasir on Thursday attacked the house of Abdul Khaleq, a member of Shelidah Union Parishad (UP). They looted Khaleq's house, as he refused to pay them Tk 50,000 in toll.
