Shooting Incident
Bulu's brother finally gets bail

Motiur Rahman Pintu, younger brother of Advisor to the Ministry of Commerce and BNP leader Barkatullah Bulu, finally obtained bail from a Dhaka court yesterday.

He received bail for the case filed in connection with the car showroom shooting on January 26. Meanwhile, arrest warrants against Pintu in two other criminal cases are pending with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM) Court.

After hearing from the prosecution and the defence on the January 30 bail petition, the court granted the bail upon a bond of Tk 5,000 with two guarantors.

The court also granted two other accused, Rafiqul Islam Sumon and Mostafizur Rahman Masud, arrested in connection with the case.

Police arrested Sumon at his Mohammadpur home on January 27 and took him on a five-day remand in three phases.

Mostafizur Rahman Masud, joint convenor of Mohammadpur Jubo League, was shown arrested in the case yesterday though his name was not in the First Information Report (FIR).

On January 26, a gang opened fire at Top Corporation, a car showroom, and damaged four cars after the owner of the showroom refused to pay them Tk 10 lakh as toll.

Police arrested Pintu on January 29 following a case filed with Mohammadpur Police Station in this connection.

Defence lawyers appeared before the court on the next day and prayed for bail in presence of the accused and the complainant.

The court did not grant bail to Pintu and fixed January 31 for further hearing even though the complainant submitted an alibi saying Pintu was not present at the spot and he did not mention his (Pintu) name in the first information report (FIR).

Moreover, the complainant Azam Khan, manager of the showroom, told the court he had no objection as the court granted bail to Pintu. The court had fixed February 2 and 5 for hearing on bail petition.

Pubali Bank Limited of Imamganj Branch in Lalbagh filed the two cases against Pintu with the CMM's Court to realise Tk10 lakh. Later, the court issued warrant of arrest against Pintu as he did not appear before the court after getting summons.

On January 30, Advocate Muzahidul Islam on behalf of the bank submitted a petition for showing Pintu arrested in the cases but the court denied it.
