Ferry service, air traffic disrupted due to fog

Ferry service at Maowa remained suspended for four hours from 6:00am yesterday due to dense fog, creating heavy traffic jam on both sides of the river.

Five ferries with over 2,000 passengers aboard were also struck in the mid-river. BIWTC officials said it will take one or two days to clear the 1.5 km long traffic jam at Maowa.

Besides, 18 launches and ships were stranded in the Dholeshwari, Padma and Meghna rivers due to dense fog, causing sufferings to the people.

The return Hajj flight of Bangladesh Biman was forced to land in Bangkok instead of Dhaka yesterday, while a British plane hovered for one hour over the sky before it had landed at Zia International Airport.

Poor visibility due to dense fog caused this problem. Passengers on board the flights suffered a lot due to this disruption.

Biman sources said the Boeing-747 on the Jeddah-Dhaka route was scheduled to land at 7:30am. But the national flag career failed to land and flew back to Bangkok, as the neighbouring two airports--Chittagong and Kolkata--were enveloped in mist.

The aircraft carrying 576 passengers returned to Dhaka and landed at Zia International Airport at 1:00pm.
