Ctg Ammo Haul
SC stays bail to accused

The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday stayed for three months a High Court (HC) order granting bail to Haji Abdus Sobhan, one of the 44 accused in Chittagong arms haul case.

After a brief hearing, Chamber Judge Amirul Kabir Chowdhury passed the order upon an application moved by the state, which preferred leave to appeal against the High Court judgement given only a few days ago.

Additional Attorney General Abdur Rezzaque Khan, assisted by Deputy Attorney General Helaluddin Mollah, stood for the state.

In April 2004, police seized 10 truckloads of sophisticated weapons and a large number of ammunition from the jetty of Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Limited (CUFL).

On October 24 last year, Chittagong metropolitan sessions judge framed charges against 44 accused, including Haji Abdus Sobhan, for arms smuggling.
